I always liked ‘69 Superbees. With the twin hood scoops from the N96 Air Grabber package, that great rear tail panel which reminded its designers of the rear of a frigate, the car just looked cool. When young I had a Superbee promo model car from a trip my Dad made to a Dodge dealer as he thought about maybe getting one (we didn’t). So I had my eye out for the best representative of the breed, and was able to buy this one.
A true survivor car, 383 with a 4 speed, numbers matching, build sheet, Galen certified, with original dealer order information and a lifetime of repair receipts. The Bee was in original paint other than touch up that was done on the lower rear quarters and a few places. In the pictures below you can see factory paint runs on the sides of the hood, in the drivers door jam and on one of the hood scoops, paint quality was maybe a bit aspirational back then.
This car ran exceptionally well and very tight. Restored cars sometimes seem loose when compared with low mileage survivors. The engine bay had quite a bit of “patina” so I ruined the survivor “feel” a bit by giving it a really good cleaning, my fault I know.
As I said, a really great car. Maybe when all said and done though, a survivor wasn’t quite for me given the small chips, dents, undercarriage rust and other wear issues that come with them. I put the car on schedule at a well known Mopar only restoration shop to have the it taken apart and restored. They correctly intervened and made me an offer on the car in order to pass it on to someone possibly more appreciative of the survivor story than me (I know, they are only original once!).
